When the city has trouble solving a rash of dangerous crimes, they call in the fugitive task force to get things done in a timely manner. I am the head of our local unit, and this time we were notified that two inmates had gotten over the fence at the local correctional facility and were considered armed and extremely dangerous. We had a perimeter set up and were hoping to tighten the noose around these suspects when we got the word they were already spotted in town robbing a vehicle. If they already are committing crimes out in the open, there really is no telling what they could do next.
Half the team went to that location while me and the rest went to the prison to look for clues. When I was informed the prison just had Securus Technologies install the inmate call monitoring system, I thought this could be a key resource in getting these two back behind bars. These inmates had to rely on outside help to get money, drugs, food, and as far away from the town as possible. I decided to stay back and get some training on the LBS software to see if it would uncover any leads for us.
I knew that someone in the jail knew something, and even though they would not come out and talk to me or my fellow officers directly, I know inmates just can not keep their mouths shut concerning crimes they have or are going to commit. My plan was to wait as long as it took for someone who either was going to meet up with those two or maybe had a beef with them, to start chattering about it over the phones.
Within hours of listening, we discovered some chatter between inmates talking about who and how these suspects were going to keep out of sight. One inmate may have been talking without realizing we were on the line, but he mentioned a safe house where his family was helping the cause and giving the inmates on the run what they needed.
Securus Technologies is currently in 2,600 prison systems, and CEO Rick Smith says his Dallas-based team of over one thousand employees are there to help the cause and do whatever it takes to make the world a safer place. Without the help of this invaluable resource, there is no telling how much damage these two could have caused.
